The UK’s landline phone system is changing. By January 2027, most landline services will move from the old analogue system to a new digital system that works through broadband.
This is called the digital switchover, and it affects not just home phones, but also equipment like personal alarms and lifelines that use your landline.
What’s Changing?
- The old landline network (called PSTN) is being switched off.
- Phone services will now use the internet, through something called VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).
- This means phones will need to be plugged into a broadband router instead of a phone socket.
- Some older phones may need an adapter to keep working.
What Devices Are Affected?
- Home phones – especially older models.
- Telecare devices – such as pendant alarms, fall detectors, or other equipment that connects to your phone line.
These may need to be checked, upgraded, or replaced to work with the new system.
Why This Is Happening
The new digital system can offer:
- Clearer call quality
- Better protection from unwanted calls
- The ability to make more than one call at a time
What You Need to Do
- Contact Your Phone Provider
- Call your provider (e.g. BT, Virgin Media O2).
- Tell them if you use a personal alarm or telecare device, or if you have a disability.
- Ask how the change will affect you.
- Check Your Phone and Broadband Setup
- You may need to plug your phone into your broadband router.
- Your provider can explain how to do this or send someone to help.
- Ask About Power Cuts
- Digital phones need electricity to work.
- If you don’t have a mobile phone, ask your provider for a free battery backup or other solution so you can still call in an emergency.
- Request Help if Needed
- If you’re vulnerable or use telecare, ask for a free engineer visit to test your equipment and make sure it will keep working.
Extra Support Available
- Providers must offer support for older people, those with disabilities, or anyone using specialist equipment.
- Many are contacting customers directly to help with the switchover.
Free Help and Advice
- Age UK and AbilityNet provide guidance and support for older and disabled people.
- Some phone companies offer free tech support or home visits for vulnerable customers.
