Hours: 25 hours per week

Huntingdonshire Society for the Blind is a local charity committed to empowering people living with visual impairment. Our mission is to help individuals maintain independence, access community resources, and improve quality of life.

We’re now looking for a compassionate and proactive Outreach Worker to join our team.

Your Impact

As an Outreach Worker, you’ll be at the heart of supporting people with sight loss, providing tailored support, advice, and access to vital services. This is a varied and rewarding role that blends emotional support, practical help, and community connection.

What You’ll Be Doing

Emotional Support

  • Respond to referrals and arrange home visits to assess needs
  • Provide ongoing emotional and practical support to members and their families/carers
  • Encourage involvement in social clubs and community activities
  • Work alongside hospital Eye Clinic Liaison Officers (ECLOs) to support newly diagnosed individuals
  • Facilitate introductions to the volunteer befriending scheme

Practical Assistance

  • Work with local Sensory Services Teams for rehabilitation and mobility support
  • Recommend and install daily living aids (e.g. lighting, magnifiers)
  • Train members on accessible tech, talking book services, and British Wireless for the Blind equipment
  • Offer advice on assistive technologies
  • Represent the Society at events and exhibitions

Referral & Advocacy

  • Connect members with other services (statutory and voluntary)
  • Help with safety referrals (e.g. for home adaptations like grab rails)

Benefits and Entitlements

  • Conduct benefit and entitlements checks
  • Assist with applications (e.g. PIP, Blue Badges, Bus Passes)
  • Support with grant applications and housing forms
  • Accompany members to Job Centre Plus or medical assessments where required
  • Draft mandatory re-considerations and attend benefit tribunals if needed

What We’re Looking For

Essential Qualifications & Requirements

  • Level 3 qualification or proven experience in Health & Social Care (or willingness to work towards it)
  • Full UK driving licence & access to a vehicle
  • First Aid at Work qualification (or willing to obtain)
  • Safeguarding training (or willing to obtain)

  • Strong communication (verbal & written) with individuals and partner organisations
  • Relationship-building and team collaboration
  • Empathy, active listening and sensitivity to individuals’ needs

Experience

  • Supporting individuals with sight loss or other disabilities
  • Conducting needs-based assessments
  • Navigating benefit systems and completing applications
  • Community engagement and multi-agency collaboration

Safeguarding

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable adults. The successful candidate will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check.
